Palhik Mana Kachina doll carving by artist Lowell Talashoma Sr. KS1029

Kachina is 18-1/4" tall including 1" base, and 6-1/2" wide at widest points.

A beautiful and rare carving as Lowell Tashoma Sr. passed away a few years ago.

The quality of the paint and detail work is amazing!

Palhik Mana is often seen grinding corn, while sometimes she is seen with colorful plants and birds. She brings rain creating life, whether it is corn or animals, and is thought very highly of to the Hopi. The Palhik Mana is often mistaken for the Poli Mana and the Salako Mana. The Palhik Mana's functions are very similar to both the Poli Mana and the Salako Mana. It is one of the most deceptive dolls. Like the Poli Mana she is the dancing partner of the Poli Kachina in Third Mesa. Also, like the Salako Mana she either is the dancing partner of the Salako Taka or the corn-grinding maid during the Puppet Dances. Some people believe that the Salako Mana and the Poli Mana are the same. Palhik Mana is impersonated by both men and women during the dances depending on what mesa they are being portrayed.

Lowell Talashoma Sr. is a unique carver. Most Kachina collectors know Lowell's work and his style. Most of his work is big in size, but it is still precise in movements, proportions, and authenticity. Lowell is in most of the Hopi Kachina books to date "The Art of the Hopi" by Lois and Jerry Jacka, "Kachina Dolls" by Helga Teiwes, "Hopi Kachina Dolls and Their Carvers" By Theda Bassman, and "Kachina Doll Carving" by Erik Bromberg. He is mentioned amongst the best Hopi Kachina carvers. Lowell adds a touch of his personality to his work, and that is what makes Lowell's dolls as unique as they are. He is a self-taught carver and he has been carving since he was ten years old. Lowell was born on January 1, 1950, in Tuba City, Arizona and passed away in 2003. He was part of the Coyote Clan.

This Kachina Doll is made of cottonwood root. Kachina is signed on the bottom of the base with "Lowell Talashoma Sr.".  If you would like to see a picture of the signature on the bottom of the base or more pictures of the doll please let us know.
