Kachina is 8-1/2" tall including 1/4" base, and 3" wide at widest points.
This is a great all around Kachina. The base of this doll features two Long Hair Kachinas (Angak'chin) and a Hopi basket, giving this doll a great background. The Takursh Mana or Yellow Corn Maiden appears with Angak'china, Ma'alo, Pawik and other Kachinas. They dance in a line separate from the other line Kachinas, but following the same pattern of turns and gestures. The Takursh Mana does make one different move. She kneels and places a large gourd on the ground to rasp. She usually carries a scapula and a notched stick, which produce a sound with different tones like a music instrument. The Long-Haired or Red Bearded or Tawa Angak'china Kachina is one of the most favored Kachinas among the Hopis. They are appreciated because of the melodious songs and the beautiful dances that they do in the spring. The main purpose of the Angak'china is to bring rain to the people and their crops. Their long hair, which is worn loosely down the back, resembles the falling rain with the eagle breast plumes rising like clouds above it. These kachinas appear in the Niman Ceremony on First Mesa
Kachina doll is carved by Hopi artist Val Ray Dewangyumptewa, Val was born in Fort Defiance, Arizona. Val is a member of the Tobacco clan of the Hopi tribe.
