Kachina is 12" tall including 1" base, and 7-1/2" wide at widest points. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING CARVING, PAINTING, AND
DETAIL! The Long-Haired or Red Bearded (Tawa Angak'china) Kachina is one of the most favored Kachinas among the Hopis. They are appreciated because of the melodious songs and the beautiful dances that they do in the spring. The main purpose of the Angak'china is to bring rain to the people and their crops. Their long hair, which is worn loosely down the back, resembles the falling rain with the eagle breast plumes rising like clouds above it. These kachinas appear in the Niman Ceremony on First Mesa.
Arvin Saufkie is an amazingly talented carver. His carving and painting is excellent in detail and workmanship. Arvin is a mostly self taught carver with influences from Silas Roy and other family. The part of making the Kachina that Arvin most enjoys is the painting and finishing, which shows in the quality of his work. He was born on 4-28-77 in Tuba city, and is part of the Hopi tribe and a member of the Coyote clan.
