Hopi Eagle and Mud Head Kachina doll by Nate Jacob KS1127

Kachina is 10-3/4" tall including 3" base, and 9-1/2" wide at widest points.

Truly amazing carving that depicts a Mud Head trying to hold a Eagle from flying away! The amount of work and detail in this doll is absolutely stunning!

The Eagle or Kwahu Kachina appears in the Kiva Dances in March, or during the Powamu Ceremony. His dance resembles the eagle's motion of flight. The dance is also a prayer for more eagles. Each dancer is pressured to imitate every step and cry of the eagle to absolute perfection. Eagles are honored guests among the Hopis and they are given gifts just as the Hopi children are. At midsummer, they are ceremonially smothered and plucked of all their plumage. Although Third Mesa portrays their Eagle Kachina with an all black body, Second Mesa's Eagle Kachina has a yellow and red body. Birds in general, have always played an important role in the Hopi ceremonies and tradition.

The Koyemsi or Mud Head is the most popular Kachina among the Hopi people because they appear in all of the ceremonies. He usually accompanys most Kachinas during the ceremonies, and they come as clowns, announcers of dances, drummers and singers. The Koyemsi is usually the one who play games, like guessing games and balancing acts, with the children in the audience.

Silas Roy was born in Tuba City, Arizona on June 6th, 1948. He is Hopi and is part of the Coyote Clan. His dolls have excellent motion, detail, and proportion. Silas is an experienced carver, he has been caving since the early 1960's. Silas carves his dolls by looking into a piece of cottonwood and then gets a vision of the motion and porportion of the doll (depending on grain of the wood), and then he carvers out the doll as perfect as he can.

This Kachina Doll is made of cottonwood root. It measures approximately 10-3/4" tall including 3" base and is  9-1/2" wide at its widest points. Kachina is signed on the bottom of the base "Nate Jacob "Eagle w/ Mud Head".  If you would like to see a picture of the signature on the bottom of the base or more pictures of the doll please let us know.
