Kachina is 8" tall including 1-1/2" base, and is 4" wide at its widest points.
This kachina doll is excllently carved, detailed, and painted. The Broad-Faced or Wuyak-kuita Kachina is a guard Kachina. In every ceremony, he helps the other guards prevent any transgression on the path of the Kachinas. He is not a guard in the Powamu Ceremony on First Mesa. He accompanies the Soyoko and helps her in all her activities. The Broad Face carries yucca whips and moves in an intimidating manner. He is the one who moves toward the clowns and terrifies them. On Third Mesa, He is the Kachina who guards the kivas to keep He Wuhti from getting too close during the Palolokong Ceremony.
Woody Sewemaenewa showed the talent required to be a great Kachina carver at a very early age. Since he was to young to be initiated as a carver, he would sneak into his father's shed and carve in secret. One day when his Kachinas were discovered, everyone in his family knew that Woody had the gift to become a carver. Then, he was guided and initiated properly by his father. Now, Woody's work is known and recognized due to his hard work and artistic ability. Woody loves to constantly carve Kachinas and his passion is seen in the different styles of Kachinas that he makes. He was born on November 27, 1969 in Keams Canyon, Arizona. Woody belongs to the Greasewood Clan.
This Kachina Doll is made of cottonwood root. It measures approximately 8" tall including 1-1/2" base, and is 4" wide at its widest points.
