This Bear is carved with an amazing level of detail, down to the fingernails on his hands. The Bear or Hon Kachina is a great legendary warrior. He possesses strength that is so great, that it is believed that he could cure the sick. There are a number of different kinds of Bear Kachinas. They are distinguished by color, such as Blue, White, Yellow, and Black Bear Kachinas. The bear dances as a watchman or side dancer during the Soyal Dance on First Mesa, and he sings while dancing outside the lines during the Mixed Dance. His most distinctive feature is the presence of a bear footprint on both cheeks.
Loren Honyouti and his brothers are amongst the best and most recognized carvers to date. Their style and carving skills are superior to most Kachina carvers. Loren is a very popular carver. He is in almost all of the books about Hopi carvers. Loren is classified as a highly skilled carver to collectors as well as carvers. He was taught by his father Clyde Honyouti and his brothers Brian and Ronald. This Kachina Doll is made of cottonwood root. It measures approximately 9-3/4" tall including 2-1/2" base and is 5" wide at its widest points. Kachina is signed on the bottom of the base "L. HONYOUTI".
